Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has announced an extensive renewable energy project pipeline focused on supporting the Government’s economic growth agenda. Rebecca Miano, Managing Director and CEO of KenGen, said that over the next 12 months, the company would deliver the 83.3 MW Olkaria I Unit 6 geothermal power plant. She added: “KenGen is also continuing with its geothermal exploration programme in Olkaria. To date, we have drilled more than 310 wells to support our geothermal-led strategy.”
Other projects at different stages of implementation include the redevelopment of Gogo Power Plant in Migori County, which will raise the installed capacity from 2 MW to 10 MW; raising the Masinga Dam spillway by 1.5m to increase its storage and power generation capacity; a feasibility study to determine the potential of wind power in Marsabit; and development of natural gas to increase baseload capacity and replace diesel generation.
KenGen is also in discussions with the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to evaluate the feasibility of installing a municipal waste-to-energy power plant with the objective of cleaning up the environment while generating power.
