The Karnataka state government in India has identified 40 lakes with a total surface area of 10 000 acres where floating solar panels will be installed to generate solar power.
NS Boseraju, Minister of Minor Irrigation from Water Resources Department of Karnataka, said that his department is looking at reducing costs on lift irrigation projects, and that these lakes can sustain solar panels that will generate 2.5 GW.
The Karnataka Renewable Energy Department Ltd (KREDL) will examine the benefits and costs of this plan for floating solar panels on irrigation lakes to determine viability.
