The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has ordered the suspension until January of electricity Generation at the Kariba Dam, which supplies power to Zimbabwe until January due to water shortage.
The ZRA said that water storage at the dam is at 4.6 per cent of capacity, below levels needed to run power generation operations at the Kariba South Bank power station. The ZRA had already warned earlier in November that there had been a sharp decline in storage levels, and it did not expect an improvement until Q1 2023, when the rains of those months begin to refill the Kariba.
Zimbabwe generates 1050 MW from the Kariba power plant, half of its installed capacity of 2100 MW.
Washington Mareya, acting Managing Director of Zimbabwe Power , said that the authorities are working on the issue.
