Jordan has signed a $24 million agreement with Arabia One for Clean Energy Investments this week to build new 10 MW solar plant located in Maan, 220 km south of Amman.
Mohannad Khalifeh, chairman of Arabia One, said the company expected the plant to be operational and connected to the grid by the last quarter of 2015.
Arabia One has made an agreement with the government to sell electricity from the plant at JD0.12 ($0.17) per kilowatt hour, Khalifeh added.
“This project is of great importance to the country and is part of several projects that Jordan seeks to implement to increase the production of electricity through renewable energy,” said Energy Minister Mohammad Hamed.
Mr Hamed also revealed that the Jordanian government is to sign agreements with several local and international companies this month to build 10 additional solar energy projects with a total capacity of 140 MW.
This week, the Jordanian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry also signed an agreement with the Shams Maan Company to buy electricity generated by their 50 MW solar power plant in the Maan Development Area.
Hamed said the project is the first of its kind in Jordan and the largest in the region, and will produce 160 GWh of clean electricity annually by 2015.
