The turbine was set up near Nagasaki prefecture as part of a project by the Ministry of the Environment, the group said in a statement.

The group had previously installed a smaller 100 kW floating turbine last year as an experimental pilot project.

Hitachi Ltd., Fuyo Ocean Development & Engineering Co., Kyoto University and the National Maritime Research Institute are also backers of the Nagasaki project.

The project comes as Japan is increasingly exploring ways to commercialise floating offshore technology.

A group led by Marubeni Corp. said in a statement earlier this month that it had installed a floating turbine off the coast of Fukushima with plans to start operations in November.
