The Japanese Government has announced that it is aiming for renewables to be its largest power source by 2040 in an attempt to reduce dependence on coal and gas and become carbon neutral by 2050.
Nuclear power will also play a major role in Japan.
Under the new plans, renewables, predominantly solar and wind, are expected to account for 40-50 per cent of electricity generation by 2040. That would be an increase from the 23 per cent from 2023 and the target of 38 per cent by 2030.
The government’s new plans forecast a 10-20 per cent increase in overall electricity generation by 2040, up from 985 TWh in 2023.
