The Iraqi oil ministry has revealed that it is expecting the current shortage of natural gas for power generation to continue until 2018.
Oil ministry spokesman Asim Jihad has stated that the shortage was partly down to the electricity ministry increasing the use of gas-fired generation in the energy mix although the country has no domestic natural gas production capabilities.
Jihad said that Iraq expects to have access to extra gas supplies after 2018, meaning it can stop importing gas for generation.
Sources disclosed earlier this year that Iraq is currently the biggest importer of Iranian gas, and will continue to be for years to come.
