Iran is to double the power generation capacity of its distributed power stations, from 500 MW to 1000 MW, by the end of the current Iranian calendar year on March 20, 2014, according to Homayoun Haeri, managing director of Iran Power Generation Transmission and Distribution Management Company (TAVANIR).

Distributed generation includes all production of electricity at or near the point of use, irrespective of size, fuel or technology, though renewable types of generation are the most common.

Haeri has previously announced that Iran plans to construct three new wind farms, each with a power generation capacity of 350 MW, despite the country’s total wind capacity currently standing at only 120 MW.

TAVANIR intends to ink deals with private sector companies to design, construct, and operate the new wind farms in the near future.

Haeri also stated that Iran’s total power generation capacity currently stands at 68.38 GW.

Iran is seeking to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for new power plants.

Iran currently exports electricity to Turkey, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan (including the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic), Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.
