The Syrian Government has signed an agreement for Iran to repair parts of the war-torn country’s power grid. The agreement involves restoring the main control centre for Syria’s electricity grid in the capital Damascus. The deal also includes rehabilitation of a 90 MW power station in Deir Az Zor province, where advances have been made against ISIL in recent days. A contract has also been signed for an Iranian company to supply power to the city of Aleppo.

Mohammad Zuhair Kharboutli, Electricity Minister for Syria, said: “The Syrian Government is working relentlessly to restore the power system. Iranian companies will have a role in rebuilding Syria.”

Sattar Mahmoudi, Iran’s Acting Energy Minister, said: “We will stand by the Syrian people to rebuild this country. We will bring light to houses of the Syrian people.” He said that the deals are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and that Iran was eager to expand its cooperation in reconstruction in Syria.
