NRG has announced that it plans to close the last operating unit at Indian River coal-fired power plant in Delaware, USA, by June 2022. Chris Moser, Executive Vice President of Operations for NRG, said that the 410 MW unit would be closed, along with a number of other coal-fired units, making up about 50 per cent of the company’s coal fleet.
Moser said that the decision was made as a result of very poor auction prices, state subsidies to renewables, and other “market distortions”. He added: “Other announcements may follow if market conditions do not improve. In the meantime, we plan to proactively preserve the value of these generation sites, which may include potential redevelopment for renewables or energy storage.”
Dave Schrader, Spokesman for NRG, said that about 50 people work at the plant, and they will have the opportunity to apply for open positions within NRG when the plant closes. He said: “NRG will also provide transition assistance and severance in accordance with NRG policies.” He added that there were as yet no plans for the facility once it has been closed.
Unit 4 of the Indian River plant began operations in 1980.
