Coal availability in India has resulted in a situation where power plants are requesting Coal India Limited (CIL) to stop further supply. Nearly a dozen plants in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal have written to CIL, citing high stock and falling demand as reasons to stop supply.

In Maharashtra state, the situation is exacerbated by a water shortage which is forcing coal-fired plants to shut down generation at GMR’s EMCO plant. Water supply to the Warora plant has been stopped by the government, causing the operator to shut down the 300 MW unit 1 of the plant. The second unit is likely to be shut down shortly, unless the drought eases.
