The Indian Government has announced that it will supply 500 MW to Pakistan. Dhruv Vijay Singh, India’s Water Resources Secretary, said: “Pakistan has asked us for power, and we told them that we have surplus power and will supply them at least 500 MW at international rates.” He said that a transmission line to supply power to Pakistan would be laid via Punjab.

Singh also said that the Punjab is asking for the Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan be scrapped. He said: “Many people in India have the same opinion. I don’t think this treaty restricts Jammu and Kashmir in construction of hydro power projects. Around 87 percent of the water under the treaty goes to Pakistan, while India gets little water for use.”
