The Gorakhpur nuclear power plant in Fatehabad, Haryana, India has encountered significant delays, with the completion of its first phase postponed to 2032.
The plant (GHAVP) was originally scheduled for completion in 2025. However, this was revised to 2028 in 2022. The Indian Government has announced another 4-year delay.
The project is divided into two phases, each of two 700 MW units, with a total capacity of 2.8 GW. Construction of units 1 and 2 is underway, with contracts awarded for essential components, including the Civil works, the Nuclear Island, and the Turbine Island. Pre-project activities for units 3 and 4, such as geotechnical investigations, have been completed.
The project has a total estimated budget of $4.9 billion.
Land acquisition for the project was completed in 2012, with the foundation stone being laid in 2014. Construction began in 2018, but the project has since faced logistical delays and regulatory hurdles.
