The first unit of the Indo-Russian joint venture Kudankulam plant began generation during October at only 120 MW, but has now risen to 40 per cent of its final 1000 MW capacity, according to site director R S Sundar.

The plant was first operational in July this year after substantial delays due to the safety risks posed by anti-nuclear activist protests in areas around the complex.

Since the plant was put into operation, it has generated 175 million units of power and supplied the same to the central grid, Mr Sundar said.

The additional power generation provided by Kundankulam will bring some relief to Tamil Nadu, which faces an on-going power deficit, though insufficient to prevent the necessary load-shedding in Chennai and other areas.
