Generation from hydropower in Pakistan is increasing due to improving water flows in main rivers, according to sources in the Ministry of Water and Power. It has now reached around 2800 MW against an installed capacity of 6500 MW.

“At present hydropower generation is 2800 MW which is 800 MW more than last week. But as far as power shortage is concerned, currently the country is facing around 4900 MW electricity shortage,” an official at the Water and Power Ministry said.

The official estimated that despite improving hydro generation, future power generation from other sources including those from Independent Power Plants (IPPs) would likely decline since the government has failed to resolve the circular debt issue.

At present, Pakistan’s total power generation from all sources is around 10 000 MW with total demand of 14 900 MW. Of this figure around 1800 MW is government run, IPPs account for 6400 MW.
