Holtec International currently in the process of mothballing Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in New Jersey, USA, said that it was interested in building a new next-generation reactor at the same site. Holtec owns the facility and oversaw the shutdown of the old plant in 2018.
The company has received $147.5 million, $116 million of which came from the US Department of Energy (DOE), to complete research and development work on building a modern reactor at the site. It said that it was looking into building its SMR-160 reactor as a demonstration project.
Joe Delmar, Spokesman for Holtec, said: “As part of our application to the DOE for its advanced reactor demonstration programme, we expressed interest in possibly locating an SMR-160 small modular reactor at the Oyster Creek decommissioning site in the future. This concept is only preliminary and something we would discuss with the local community if plans to locate the reactor at Oyster Creek evolve.” He said that Holtec is engaged with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission about the project. It has not yet formally applied to build the reactor.
