Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Petroleum, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has said that the country is on course to achieve it targeted power generation capacity of 5000MW by 2016. He also said that the country was on course to achieve gas-based generation accounting for 80 per cent of thermal power plants by 2015. Buah said that the Ministry is focused on improving the current enabling environment to attract prospective developers to the power sector.

According to Buah, in order to meet the growing electricity demand, Ghana has to add 200MW of power every year for the next 20 years. He anticipates the bulk of this being achieved by IPPs.
Buah was speaking following a meeting with Shandong Electric Power Construction Corporation (SEPCOIII), which is planning to invest in Ghana. Zhang Huanxiang, Vice President and Chief Engineer of SEPCOIII, confirmed that the company will enter the Ghanaian market and assist the government in meeting its power generation target.
