Ghana is to increase power generation from the current 3000 MW to 5000 MW by 2015 in order to become a net exporter of power.
Ghanaian Vice-President, John Dramani Mahama, said Ghana would use the gas from the Jubilee Field to produce domestic power and supply the excess to neighbouring countries. He was briefing the Ghanaian community in Washington, DC on ongoing government programmes and projects.
Mr Mahama also said that Ghana had comparative advantage in power generation in Africa and indicated that the country would take advantage of the West African Power Pool to sell power to neighbouring countries.
He said Ghana’s economy had improved significantly and indicated that inflation was down, the cedi had stabilised and interest rate was also going down.
He said the fact that Ghana had attained a middle-income status had boosted its image and made it credit worthy.
On oil, he said the government had put in place the necessary legislation and mechanisms to regulate its operation and ensure transparency in the use of the oil revenue.
Mr Mahama further urged Ghanaians in the Diaspora to take advantage of the oil find and consider returning home to work as engineers in oil exploration or invest in the provision of services in the oil sector.
