The dam will increase the country’s generation capacity by almost 20 per cent, and hugely improve the reliability and security of power provision in the north of the country.

President Mahama said the dam coming on stream represented a remarkable stride forward for the country’s energy sector and would help mitigate the current national energy crisis.

Mr Mahama recognised his predecessor John Agyekum Kufuor’s bold decision in taking the dam project forward, securing a loan from the Chinese government to fund construction.

Mahama said the Ghanaian government cherished its long standing relationship with China and expressed the hope that such a relationship would continue to strengthen for mutual benefit.

Mr Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, Chief Executive Officer of the BPA, stated that various non-power work on the project would continue until the second quarter of 2014.

The Bui hydroelectric project is primarily intended to provide power generation, but additionally involves the development of an agriculture irrigation scheme and opportunity for enhanced eco-system and fisheries development.
