President John Mahama of Ghana has said that the Ghanaian government has provided provisional licences to nine organisations to invest in power generation projects. He said that energy demand had reached a point where the private sector would have to complement government efforts in order to meet demand.
President Mahama said this during the inauguration of a $2 million 2MW solar power plant at Navrongo in the Upper East Region province. The plant’s output will later be expanded to 2.5MW. He said that the inauguration of the country’s first solar plant marked the start of a new era.
He also said that while the government was working hard to reverse the current national load-shedding problem, consumers should learn to conserve energy and pay a realistic cost that would empower the Volta River Authority and the Electricity Company of Ghana to generate and distribute more power.
