Germany is restarting a second coal-fired reserve power plant as the country tries to conserve gas supplies for the coming winter. Uniper , operator of the 875 MW Heyden plant near Hanover in northern Germany said it will re-enter service on 29 August until the end of April 2023.
Germany plans to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2038. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the resulting disruptions to the energy market are resulting in some plants being temporarily reactivated.
A regulation has been in place in Germany since July 14 to allow coal-fired power plants from the grid reserve to be reactivated to help conserve gas. Plants on the reserve only produce electricity as required to ensure grid stability.
