The German government has announced it intends to call for tenders for initially 10 GW of new gas-fired power station capacity, which must later be switched to running on green hydrogen.
German utility Uniper is considering participating, with potential development of 1-2 GW. Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, said: “We could initially participate with plants of one to two GW if the appropriate conditions are met. If possible, we want to decide this year.”
He said that Uniper’s decision would depend on the framework conditions, and that the Government needed to spell out details of capital and operating subsidies.
First tenders could take place this year if the legislative procedures are ready in time. The German Government wants to phase out coal-fired stations before the official target date of 2038.
