German renewables meet 100 per cent of power demand for second time ever

Data from the German Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) indicates that on 1 May, Germany’s renewable power production exceeded the country’s electricity demand. Renewable power output reached 53,987 MWh at 1pm, while consumption was 53,768 MWh. According to BNetzA’s live energy data portal smard.de, renewable power exceeded consumption for about two and a half hours.

Peter Altamaier, Germany’s Economy and Energy Minister, said on social media network Twitter that it was “great” that the country was able to cover its demand with renewables. He added: “Now transmission lines take precedence so that the power can flow.”
