US utility Georgia Power is seeking approval to add 2.3 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2022 as part of a wider plan to expand its renewable capacity to 11.5 GW by 2035.
The proposal is part of the company’s 2022 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), submitted to the Georgia Public Service Commission at the end of January. The IRP outlines steps that Georgia Power will take to support the transition to clean energy.
In addition, Georgia Power has requested permission to own and operate 1 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030 and invest in hydropower plants. It anticipates investing in long-duration storage, hydrogen, tall wind technologies, and distributed energy resources during 2022.
