US-based GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has signed an agreement with Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE), Poland's largest power company, to collaborate on a plan to build nuclear power plants in Poland. GEH will provide support for conducting feasibility studies for the construction of Poland's first nuclear power plants in two locations (up to four reactors per site). PGE is targeting the completion of the first reactor in 2020.

Poland currently relies on coal-fired thermal power generation for about 90 per cent of its electricity. Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020, and is pursuing plans to build nuclear power plants that produce no CO2 in operation.

PGE has recently agreed to collaborate with GEH upon executing its plan to construct two nuclear reactors at each of two locations. The evaluation of economic efficiency and technical advantages will be conducted on the GEH-designed 1350 MW advanced boiling water reactor (ABWR) and 1520 MW economic simplified boiling water reactor (ESBWR) as candidate reactors for the project.
