French utility EDF said that it had reached an industrial milestone in the implementation of a fuel process known as Ecocombust to replace coal in power generation. It said that it plans to use this in the Cordemais and Havre plants.
France plans to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2022, resulting in the shutdown of the two plants. In order to secure reliable power supply, the French Government asked EDF to study the possibility of using biomass as fuel at the plants. The French Energy Ministry said in a separate statement that a decision on implementing EDF’s ecocombust process as the Cordemais and Havre coal power plants could be taken in the autumn.
