FirstEnergy of the USA has taken the next step in closing down its nuclear power facilities as part of its bankruptcy filing.
FirstEnergy Solutions, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy that manages the company’s power generation, has sent a letter to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission saying that it plans to start shutting down three nuclear power plants, Davis Besse and Perry in Ohio, and Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania, by May 2020. The company said that it can no longer operate the plants without financial help.
The company has been pushing state lawmakers to allow for rate increases to electric bills. It is also requesting the Department of Energy to intervene using the Federal Power Act, arguing that this is necessary for fuel security and diversity.
