First US-Mexico cross border wind project comes online

The project will connect the Tecate-based wind farm with the San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) Powerlink transmission system via a new cross-border transmission line. The project is not connected to the Mexican power grid and SDG&E is buying the electricity generated by the project under a 20-year power agreement.

The wind farm at Sierra Juarez consists of 47 turbines of 3.3 MW each in a location that has one of the strongest wind resources on the west coast of North America, according to InterGen.

IEnova chief executive, Carlos Ruiz Sacristan, said: “This project will contribute to the sustainable development of the cross-border region”
