EU power plant emissions slashed by 24 per cent in 2023

The European Commission has announced that carbon emissions from power plants fell by 24 per cent compared to 2022, the fastest decline in history. It said that the decline is due to the increase in renewable energy production and the decrease in output from fossil fuel-fired power plants.

This sector is covered by the European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS), and this is the fastest decline in emissions since the system’s inception. The previous fastest annual decline occurred in 2020, when ETS-covered emissions fell by 13.3 per cent. The European Commission said in a press release: “ETS emissions are now about 47 per cent lower than in 2005 and are on track to achieve the goal of reducing emissions by 62 per cent by 2030.”
