The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has said that it expects total electricity generation in the country to grow by 5.7 per cent in 2013-14, as compared to a 4 per cent rise recorded in 2012-13. CMIE said that it expects power stations in India to generate 963.6 billion units of electricity over the year, a record for the country.

Gas-based generation declined by 6.8 per cent in 2011-12, and by 28.5 per cent in 2012-13. The CMIE report predicts that this downward trend will continue for gas-based generation, estimating that it will decline by around 10 per cent in 2013-14.

Coal-based power generation is expected to increase by 7 per cent, or by around 17,000MW.

The report said that hydroelectric power generation is expected to grow by 9.3 per cent in 2013-14, to 124.3 billion units. It said that this will be due to an increase in generation capacity and higher availability of water. In 2013-14, hydroelectric power generation capacity in India is expected to grow by 2317MW.

CMIE said that nuclear power generation will stage a modest recovery in 2013-14. After a rise of just 1.8 per cent in 2012-13, it is expected to grow by 5.9 per cent to 34.8 billion units in 2013-14.
