Mitsubishi Power Americas and El Paso Electric have announced that they have reached a joint development agreement (JDA) to develop projects that offer a combination of renewables, energy storage, and power generation using hydrogen. Under the terms of the agreement, the two will work together to help El Paso Electric reach 80 per cent carbon-free resource mix by 2035 and develop a roadmap to achieve a 100 per cent carbon-free energy mix by 2045.
They will develop a strategy to use hydrogen to generate electricity across El Paso’s power generation fleet. Part of the plan includes converting Newman Power station’s newest unit from 100 per cent natural gas to a blend of up to 30 per cent hydrogen, and eventually to 100 per cent hydrogen.
The two will also work to evaluate regional transportation, commercial, and other industrial sectors to promote future decarbonisation and economic growth.
