According to a report from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), US hydropower electricity generation is expected to rise by 6 per cent from the low of 2023 to 250 TWh.
The Short-Term Energy Outlook anticipates that hydropower output will increase in nearly every part of the USA, with notable increases in the Southeast and in the Northwest and Rockies. It anticipates that the New York region will increase slightly, and remain the same in California.
More hydropower is generated in the Northwest and Rockies region than any other region of the country: in 2023, 43 per cent of all US hydropower generation occurred in this region. Due to a heatwave in May 2023, last year’s hydropower output was the region’s lowest since at least 2010. The latest water supply forecast suggests that the region will generate 106 TWh in 2024, up sharply on 2023. The EIA report predicts hydropower will account for 29 per cent of the region’s electricity.
