Egypt’s Electricity Minister Hassan Younis has reported that a total of 2500 MW, generated exclusively from wind power, will soon be added to the national power grid.
This imminent increase dwarfs Egypt’s existing wind power capacity of only 550 MW, and this figure will rise to over 7200 MW by 2020, the minister said.
He also unveiled that the private sector will contribute 1370 MW to power generation projects.
“The ministry is now encouraging the private sector to take part in power generation projects by providing all technical information needed to investors and offering necessary government guarantees” said Younis.
Field studies are under way to set up the countries first private sector wind farm. It will likely be situated in the Gulf of Suez and will be operational by 2014, he confirmed.
