E.ON has made its first significant move in Germany’s decentralised power market by agreeing to build four CHP units for retailer Metro. The deal comes as Germany tries to move away from large nuclear and coal power plants to a more decentralised system based on smaller units and renewable energy.

While the partnership with Metro is small – commercial terms of the deal were not disclosed – it does give E.ON access to a market that it believes will be worth €10 billion annually across Europe by 2020. Under the known terms of the deal, E.ON will build, finance, and maintain four gas-fired power turbines, each capable of generating 250-800kW, at two of Metro’s German cash and carry stores and at two Russian outlets.
