The closure of 1800 MW of power generation at Newton and Baldwin power plants was decided as they had been failing to recover basic operating costs. The decision will lead to southern Illinois losing about 30 per cent of its generating capacity.
"This is a difficult decision, and we don't take it lightly," Dynegy Chief Executive Officer Robert Flexon said in a statement. "For 40 years, the employees of the Baldwin and Newton Power Stations have generated reliable and affordable power for the people of Illinois."
The announcement has come just two months after Dynegy said it would retire a 465 MW Illinois coal plant in June, while it has also said it will decide upon shutting down an additional 500 MW of coal capacity.
