The new Dutch government has said it will support construction of four new utility-scale power reactors as part of a programme to triple the amount of government money devoted to the funding of nuclear projects.
Silvio Erkens, a member of the VVD (People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy) that will be part of the new government, said officials have a tender planned to determine the technology that will be used for the first two nuclear plants. The new government said it will use €14 billion for a nuclear construction programme.
Officials have also said they will consider buying a stake in the 485 MW Borssele nuclear power plant, which is currently the only nuclear power facility in the Netherlands, if it is decided to extend its current operation beyond 2033.
