Duke plans to delay closure of Gibson coal-fired power plant despite earlier climate change plans

Duke Energy has announced that it plans to extend the life of the 3132 MW coal-fired Gibson Generating Station in Indiana, USA to 2038, despite earlier plans to close it by 2035.

The Gibson plant is currently that largest operating coal-fired power plant in the USA.

Lynn Good, CEO of Duke Energy, said that higher than expected demand for power, especially from data centres, has complicated Duke’s goals to cut carbon emissions. A spokeswoman for Duke said that the company is planning to build solar power and battery storage, but that power demand has grown in recent years and grid requirements prevent it from relying more on solar.
