Duke Energy Florida has announced that it will terminate all plans to build its Levy Nuclear Power Project. As part of a deal with the Florida Public Service Commission, the company will instead invest $6 billion in solar energy, smart meters, grid modernisation, and a battery storage pilot programme.
Duke said that its move reflects global trends that see surging growth for solar power as prices fall, while increasingly uncompetitive nuclear power stagnates.
The deal includes Duke adding an extra 700 MW of solar energy, doubling the total solar power generation capacity in Florida.
