Doosan Enerbility signed an MOU on 23 October with the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan to cooperate in the development of the country’s power industry.
The MOU is to develop and modernise Kazakhstan’s power industry, critical given that fossil-fuel power generation capacity accounts for 80 per cent of its total electricity production. More than half of these plants are over 30 years old, in urgent need of refurbishment.
Kazakhstan has a declared goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, and the introduction of cleaner energy sources, such as nuclear power, is a key part of this strategy.
Kazakhstan plans to build two nuclear power plants in the Ulken region. A national referendum showed that 71.12 per cent of voters were in favour of constructing these plants.
Kim Jung-kwan, Head of Marketing for Doosan Enerbility, said: “The carbon-free power generation technologies that Doosan Enerbility possesses, such as nuclear power, SMR, and gas turbines, will be the most efficient and effective alternatives for Kazakhstan’s power plants. We look forward to further expanding and strengthening cooperation to contribute to Kazakhstan’s carbon neutrality goals and energy security.”
