The South Korean company Daewoo has signed a construction agreement with the Kenyan Electricity Generating Company to build a $1.3 billion coal-fired power station. The plant will be located in Kilifi county, and will consist of two 300 MW turbines. When the plant enters operation, it will be the largest power station in East Africa.
The Kenyan government has said that it wishes to increase power capacity in the country by 1500 MW by 2019.
South Korea is increasing its level of investment and aid in Africa, with the International Contractors Association of Korea recording a 28 per cent rise in Korean construction projects on the African continent compared to last year’s corresponding year-to-date figure.
