Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) and CPC Corporation of Taiwan have created 20 teams to conduct geothermal exploration around Taiwan in 2025.
Lien Ching-chang, Vice Minister of Economic Affairs for Taiwan, said that the aim is to generate 1 GW of geothermal energy by 2028. He added that the government will continue to put effort into promoting other forms of renewable energy..
Lien said that the government has set an objective of producing sustainable energy to account for 60-70 per cent of the country’s total power generation by 2050.
Around 20 CPC-Taipower teams will start a geothermal exploration project across Taiwan in 2025. This follows the drilling of Taiwan’s first deep geothermal well in Yuanshan Township in Yilan County in October. Work here is scheduled for completion by June 2025.
Kuo Jyh-huei, Economic Affairs Minister, said that Taiwan had about 1 GW of shallow geothermal energy potential, and about 40 GW of deep geothermal energy potential.
