State-owned China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has announced that it has completed construction of the outer containment dome of the Karachi Unit 2 nuclear power plant in Pakistan. This was the last step in the building phase of the 1000 MW Karachi Unit 2, which is now ready for containment and heat tests. It is scheduled to begin operations in 2020.

The plant uses CNNC’s HPR1000 technology, which features a double containment design, with the outer containment providing additional protection for the primary containment.

The company said: “CNNC has four HPR1000 under construction around the world, and these make up the world’s only third-generation pressurised water reactor nuclear power project constructed on schedule.”
