CK Power , the power generation arm of CH Karnchang, is conducting a feasibility study into building a hydropower plant near Luang Prabang on the Mekong River in northern Laos. This follows a delay brought about by the impact of the Covid pandemic.
Muntana Auekitkarjorn, CK Power’s Deputy Managing Director for Corporate Planning, said the uang Prabang project, its third hydropower plant in Laos, will have a development cost of $4.5-5 billion. She said the study will be conducted alongside negotiations over a power rate tariff with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), which will be the power buyer. The Luang Prabang project will be a run-of-river dam built on the Mekong in Houygno, about 25 km from Luang Prabang. It is estimated the project will have a capacity of 1460 MW. Developers plan to sell the electricity to Thailand or Vietnam.
Construction is scheduled for completion in 2027.
