It has been announced that construction of what is claimed to be the world’s largest battery energy storage station has been completed in China. The utility-scale project in Zhangbei, Hebei Province, has been led by BYD and the State Grid Corporation of China. The project combines 140 MW of renewable energy generation with a smart power transmission system and 36 MWh of energy storage.
Part of China’s Golden Sun renewable energy programme, the State Grid project has outpaced similar projects, and has been announced as China’s largest and first environmentally friendly battery storage station. The first phase of its investment is worth over $500 million, and consists of 100 MW of wind, 40 MW of solar, and 36 MWh of battery power.
According to the partners, there are currently no battery systems of this size in the world. The objective of the project is to demonstrate a stable solution for transferring vast amounts of renewable electricity safely to the grid. BYD provided the energy storage batteries for the project. The iron-phosphate battery technology from BYD was selected because of its superior service life, which is greater than 20 years.
