China’s coal-fired power plant construction reaches 10-year high

A joint report from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) and Global Energy Monitor (GEM) says that there has been a resurgence in construction of new coal-fired power plants in China which is “undermining the country’s clean-energy progress.”

China began building 94.5 GW of new coal-fired capacity and resumed 3.3 GW of suspended projects in 2024, the highest level of construction for 10 years. The report said that this accelerated build “raises critical concerns” about China’s ability to transition away from fossil fuels.
