China’s National Bureau of Statistics has published data that shows that the country’s coal-fired power generation increased by 1.5 per cent in 2024, despite assurances that it had peaked.
Thermal power generation increased by 1.5 per cent to 6340 TWh in 2024.
Peng Chengyao, Director for China Power and Renewables at S&P Global Commodity Insights , said thermal generation was higher than predicted because of a higher than expected growth in power demand due to a hot summer and on weaker than expected hydropower output, still recovering from a severe drought in 2023.
