The top Chinese economic planner has approved the construction of the second phase of Hongyanhe nuclear power plant in Wafandian city, in the northeast Liaoning province. This is the first Chinese nuclear power plant to be granted such permission since 2011.
The second phase of the Hongyanhe nuclear power plant will include two 1000 MW reactors and while approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, it still needs to be receive a construction license from the National Nuclear Safety Administration.
The project was started in 2007 and is designed to eventually house six generating units of the 1000 MW class. Two are already in use, whereas a third will be developed early this year and the fourth is still being built.
China suspended all new nuclear power plants and carried out a detailed safety review after Japan's Fukushima accident in 2011.
Last year China announced that it would restart nuclear power generation in coastal areas. Nuclear energy represents two per cent of China's total energy mix.
