According to figures from Aneel , Brazil’s electricity regulator, Brazil’s installed power generation capacity increased by a record 10.9 GW in 2024, above government predictions of 10.1 GW.
Aneel said that the largest share of new generation capacity connected to the grid in 2024 came from new solar capacity from 147 new solar farms, which contributed over 5.6 GW. Wind power contributed the second largest share of new capacity, with 121 new wind farms adding 4.3 GW of new capacity. Hydropower capacity added 56 MW from 11 new plants. Thermal generation capacity increased by 907 MW from 22 new plants.
Over 70 per cent of the new capacity came from three states: Minas Gerais (3.17 GW), Bahia (2.4 GW), and Rio Grande do Norte (1.8 GW).
Brazil now has 209 GW of installed capacity connected to the grid, of which 85 per cent is renewable.
