According to a 10-year plan, the microgeneration segment – mainly small-sized solar power for self-supply – will grow from the current 8 GW to 37 GW, accounting for 14 per cent of installed capacity. Hydropower’s share will drop to 45 per cent of total capacity, down from 58 per cent in 2021 and 83 per cent in the early 2000s.

The Brazil government expects power supply from fossil fuels – coal, natural gas, and diesel – to grow by 12 GW and reach 35 GW by 2031.

The increase in power supply is likely to require investment of around $100 billion over the next decade.

Brazil’s transmission lines are expected to expand by 19 per cent over the next 10 years to 209 000 km.
