Blackstone has agreed to acquire Potomac Energy Centre, a 774 MW natural gas-fired power plant in Loudon County, Virginia, USA. Blackstone gave no financial details, but it has been estimated that $1 billion is being paid for the facility.
Potomac Energy Centre is located near Washington DC, which is estimated to have around a quarter of the current US data centre capacity. Bilal Khan, Senior Managing Director of Blackstone Energy Transition Partners, said that this proximity was one of the reasons why Potomac Energy Centre was an attractive investment. Khan said: “This opportunity is unique. Not only for its location and its unparalleled access to data centres in Virginia, but also for the efficiency of the plant and the young age of the facility.” The plant was built in 2017.
